Full Details

Eleocharis palustris, commonly known as common spike-rush, is a clump-forming, grass-like perennial with thin, upright green stems forming dense tussocks along pond edges and shallow water. It produces inconspicuous greenish-brown flower spikes in summer that rise just above the foliage, providing subtle texture rather than showy blooms.

This species is valuable for wetland biodiversity, offering cover for small wildlife and helping stabilise pond margins and damp soils. Its upright, dense habit and tolerance of consistently wet conditions make it ideal for pond edges, wet meadows, and naturalistic water garden schemes.
